Finland to support children’s summer event in Gaza

Press Release 213/2010
7 July 2010

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen has granted 1.5 million euros in financial support to the Gaza Summer Games 2010, a children’s event organized by the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees UNRWA. The purpose of the games is to offer children a break from the conflict and the poverty that surrounds them by organizing summer holiday activities that enhance and contribute to tolerance. The project is designed to support the local community more generally.

Because of the situation in Gaza, the children who live in the area have very limited opportunities to play and have fun, which would contribute to the development of a future-oriented world-view.

Finland is the single biggest sponsor of the project.
