Finland to support Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections in September

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen has granted 250,000 euros to support the organization of Afghanistan’s upcoming parliamentary elections on September 18, 2010. The purpose is to contribute to a successful electoral process through the UNDP Electoral Fund.

Supporting democratic development in Afghanistan is integral to the achievement of sustainable peace and stability in the country. Finland has consistently supported the organization of elections in Afghanistan, and the decision now announced represents a further step in promoting the country’s democratic development.

At the same time, the funds granted will be conducive to the development of good administration, which is one of the main goals set for Finland’s development cooperation with Afghanistan. In addition, the project supports the promotion of human rights and gender equality.
