Last Friday, it was again that time of the year. Namely, the time for the traditional event of Finnish Tennis Diplomacy. The second time in the making, the event brought together the Finnish Permanent Representation to the European Union and the European Commission for a joyful yet competitive match of tennis, all in the name of diplomacy!
Vice-President Jyrki Katainen was the captain of the team of the Commission, which consisted of Vice-President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič and members of various Commission cabinets, directorate-generals and secretariat-general.
Deputy Permanent Representative Minna Kivimäki captained the Finnish team that consisted of EU diplomats and officials.
Like last year, the games were played in extremely good weather. The sun and heat embraced the players throughout the whole day. The tournament lasted for 3 hours and included several sets of incredibly tough games. The games, the heat and the atmosphere captivated both the players and the audience.
In the end, the Commission team won by 43 – 86. Once again, Jyrki Katainen’s team was crowned the winner, just like last year. The team of the Finnish Permanent Representation did however put on a good fight and actually managed to improve their points from last year.
The trophy, nicknamed “the boy” according to Finnish traditions, goes to the Berlaymont again this year. However, in a year from now, the traditional event of Finnish Tennis Diplomacy will once again take place and who knows; perhaps the team of the Finnish Permanent Representation will have the honour to take it home then!
